iPhone hacks from Pimp-My-i

Just another iPhone weblog

Create your own Winterboard theme

Easy, absolutely easy. A simple tutorial which ANYONE can follow.

Requirements: Computer, iPhone browser, Paint (or a similar program to edit and draw pictures), A picture (bigger than 320×480), already installed themes (optional).
iPhone browser: please see SSH without wifi (All tutorials and pages)
Method:
1) Use Paint (a built in Windows program) or something similar to open up your picture.
2) Crop it so that it has the exact dimensions of 320×480.
3) Save it to your desktop as Wallpaper.png
4) Connect your iDevice and open iPhone Browser.
5) Click (Go to location) on the menu bar at the top (in iPhone browser).
6) Click Winterboard themes in the drop-down menu. iPhone browser will automatically open up the winterboard theme directory.
7) In the directory, you should see a list of your downloaded themes.
8) Right click the ‘Themes’ directory (on the left) and click ‘New Folder’. Name the folder whatever you want (This will be your theme name)
8) Click on the newly created folder and drag your custom Wallpaper.png from your desktop into the space on the right. Your picture will copy into /yourthemename directory. (Your picture will only be copied – it wont be moved)
9) Create a copy of Wallpaper.png on your desktop and name it LockBackground and also drag it into the /yourthemename folder. This will become your Lock Background wallpaper (you can also use a different lock background to your springboard background.)
10) If you have a Dock picture, copy that into the directory as well.
11) Right click /yourthemename and click New folder to create a new folder in that directory:
You will need to create 3 seperate folders:
/yourthemename/Bundles;
/yourthemename/Icons; and
/yourthemename/UIImages
12) You will also need to create 3 sub(sub) directories:
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.telephonyUI;
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.springboard; and
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.springboard/en.lproj
13) In the directories you will put the following:
/yourthemename : Springboard background (Wallpaper.png), Lock Background (LockBackground.png), Dock image (Dock.png)
/yourthemename/Bundles : nothing
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.telephonyUI : Unlock Slider image 1)Lockscreen slider: (bottombarknobgray.png) 2)Green slider [don't know what it does]: (bottombarknobgreen.png) 3)Shutdown slider: (bottombarknobred.png)
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.springboard : Delete app icon [the x you see when you delete iTunes installed apps] (closebox.png), Keypad [the password number pad] (DeviceLockKeypad.png), Keypad pressed [what the pad looks like when everything is pressed at once] (DeviceLockKeypadPressed.png)
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.springboard/en.lproj : Slide Unlock String (see below)
/yourthemename/Icons : App icons ([nameofapp].png)
/yourthemename/UIImages : System Images (DONT BOTHER CAUSE YOU WILL SPEND MORE THAT YOUR LIFETIME MAKING THESE YOURSELF, alternatively, you can just copy the entire folder of another theme you like over for their system images.
14. Close iPhone Browser and respring your iDevice. Go into Winterboard and your theme should be there!
CHANGING BATTERY ICONS, CARRIER LOGOS, WIFI SIGNAL BARS INFO:
1) All these things go into the folder:
/yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.springboard (should already be created) NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE ALREADY AVAILABLE PICTURES ON HAND WITH PROPER NAMES FOR THEM! or you can go the long way – here’s a list of names your things should have:
BatteryBG_xx.png: Big recharging battery. Note that xx has the value of 1 to 17. Each of these images should be a picture of your battery during different stages of charging
Default_x_Bars.png: cellular signal strength. Same deal with x (1-5)
FSO_x_Bars.png: coloured cellular signal strength.
Default_x_AirPort: Wifi signal strength
2) Carrier is a bit trickier. Create a folder /yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.ATT_US (this is for AT&T carriers) Stick in your images:
Default_CARRIER_ATT.png: your AT&T carrier logo.
FSO_CARRIER_ATT.png: your colored AT&T carrier logo.
FOR T-Mobile, the process is similar. Just add a folder and put in the images /yourthemename/Bundles/com.apple.Unknown and there you have it.
2) Custom 3G icons: add the following files /yourthmemname/Bundles/com.apple.Springboard
Default_UMTS_ON.png
FSO_UMTS_ON.png
PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT PROPORTION AND SIZE FOR ALL THESE IMAGES.

*NOTE: THE PATHS AND IMAGE NAMES ARE CASE SENSITIVE – MAKE SURE YOUR NAMES ARE CORRECT!!
**NOTE: the directories posted here are the ones I used. There are more, but your gonna have to copy and paste from existing themes, because there is just too much to make. (Same with the UIImages, an example is the ‘LOADING spinning wheel picture’. There is 104 different (and YES I did count them) versions of a single picture.)
***The Slide Unlock String is the words you see when you ‘slide to unlock’. Click on the following link, open it and copy and paste the written words into a text editor, change the “ENTER YOUR OWN STRING” to whatever you like, but DON’T EDIT ANYTHING ELSE, rename it as SpringBoard.strings (CASE SENSETIVE). Copy it into the directory (written above) and make sure there is no .txt extension [SpringBoard.strings.txt]. (If there is, rename it and delete the extension.)
SpringBoard.strings.

    • Oh yeah, I had the same problem too. I think I have the wrong file name. Please research somewhere else. I will try update my post in the meantime, but it’s a bit hard seeing as none of my themes have a custom wifi logo.
